Legislative Relations – Student Government Association

WHAT WE DO

Legislative Relations (LR), is a Student Government organization whose purpose is to provide students with a voice to the governing bodies that influence the future of Texas A&M University. These governing bodies include the U.S. and Texas Legislatures, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the Texas A&M System Board of Regents

HOW WE DO IT

The Commission keeps abreast of current legislative issues through various information sources such as communications with interest groups and congressional offices. With this information, LR determines which issues could possibly have an impact on Texas A&M University. LR then provides policymakers with relevant and up-to-date information about the issues that affect Texas A&M students.

The Commission welcomes the input of interested students, parents, and alumni who are concerned about the future of higher education policy.

24-25 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

Occupancy Preemption

  • Texas has an abundance of empty bedrooms.
  • At the same time we face a shortage of homes.
  • The Texas legislature should legalize spare bedrooms by preempting restrictive family definitions in zoning ordinances.

Student as a Protected Class

  • Students should have access to fair and affordable housing.
  • Students should have the same protections against discrimination as other groups.
  • Adopt including students as a protected class to prevent housing discrimination.
  • Incorporate the classification of “student” into the Texas Housing Statue’s Protected Class list.

First Generation Grant Matching Program

  • The First Generation Matching Grant Program is a need-based financial aid program supported with both institutional and state funding.
  • Increase financial support for first generation college students, especially those attending colleges lacking dedicated first-generation programs.
